just another thought
Why I went from corporate life to entrepreneurship

Probably like so many others my Goal where to start up on my own before I turned 30 – a goal I missed!

I got caught up in chasing a management career in corporate life, and for about 2 years ago I found my self in one of the largest media corporations in Denmark as Head of sales for the radio division.

I liked my corporate life, I liked being part of something big, and I liked having a lot of close and also more distant co-workers. I liked the empowerment of belonging to a big brand and I hate to say it, but I actually also liked the political game on a top-level management in a larger media corporation. Something I will write more about another time.

All good things comes to an end, the Corporation I worked for, where probably one of the first in Denmark to be hit by the upcoming (and now hopefully soon over) financial crisis. The Radio division got sold of, and I had a choice to make.
I had the chance to get the same position at the new owner of the radio and actually the management part (in number of employees) would increase.
But realising I had been working with Radio for almost teen years, knowing that it weren’t my true passion. Don’t get me wrong I believed/believe in radio, but what got me engine running, where building the business strategies, implementing them and that little fantastic part called people management.

It where time to seek new opportunities – and like most opportunities the happen for a bunch of reasons!

After turning down a few number of actually interesting jobs – I got to the conclusion that the only thing that would kick some life into my working life, where to go out on a limp!

Thinking back – it weren’t the dream of becoming the entrepreneurial visionary, the insanely rich self employed, the eager to show the world that I where the new Richard Branson - its so simple - I need to dare my self – I need to kick some life into my old comfy me – the big car, the nice restaurants, the expensive vacations – everything had to become unstable for me to feel a live and to grow, both as a person and a leader.

Holy shit the comfy things are gone – but I love it – everyday of it!
I never been more tired, I never worked more – but I never felt a joy about building both business and people as I do know – for the first time in my I feel I am giving it my all – and that feeling is why I went from corporate life to entrepreneurship.

There is no reason to be stressed by tasks and projects - just put one foot in front of the other and slowly increase the tempo.
My nigtly dilemmas

It’s 7.30 pm, again another day have raced by, and I find my self sitting here with my nightly dilemma.

I need to make a presentation for a new client meeting in the morning, I need to make a budget for a specific pitch coming up and I need to follow up on some tools we have started working with clearing up Rolls and responsibilities for everybody.

Then in one hand I hold a twelve pages interesting report from The Economist on “A world of connections – a special report on social networking” and in the other hand I hold a 120 pages thesis from a brilliant student at Copenhagen Business school on “Relation building in social media”.

On top of that I have a beautiful, intelligent and fantastic girl friend which I love spending my time with.

Now I am not complaining – I am living the life of my passion, but this is my dilemma, so many things I should and would love to do, every night, I just can get around to it all.

Well, it’s a positive dilemma – I should just get the presentation done, do the budget tomorrow, look at the rolls and responsibility thing – put it in order, save the thesis to the weekend take the report from the Economist with me and hurry home to my girl friend – it’s just a thought!

Why being a part of a venture can be great!

We see it every day, companies build on passion by dedicated people crashing and not rising to their potential. One of the biggest problems is often that the entrepreneur loves what his company is working with, but part of that is not structure and focus on finances.

We started our company, a Copenhagen based agency for about 1,5 year ago. In October of 2009 we sold a part of our little baby to an entrepreneurial venture - Akasha Ventures (http://akashaventures.com).

Of cause a part of you are hurting a bit, when you let a part go, but actually I have never done anything more wise!

Last Thursday we went to the first summit, with some of the other companies being a part of Akasha, all of these Copenhagen based, they are:

ArtRebels - amongst many things an online platform for unique designers and an agency - http://artrebels.com/

Snitker & co - an Global Usability Research agency, http://www.snitker.com/

Vintage & Rare - An online platform for the finest instruments straight from dealers and builders http://www.vintageandrare.com/

The last company attending is still in incubation, they are launching very soon, its an online platform with a special and good purpose, the rest has to wait!

Some of the great things about being part of a venture is the fantastic insights you get from the other companies, the help on a daily basis from being part of a venture with a entrepreneurial focus and understanding, the feeling of being part of a movement.

On the summit, we got presented with a great tool box, which can secure that we can build a system that keeps a focus on the right things, that can structure the companies and through this help the entrepreneurs that are building their business on passion not to crash, because of the lack of structure and focus on simple things like cash flow.

Building an entrepreneurial movement is one of my personal great passions, so this will not be the last time, I share my experiences and thoughts on this with you!
